Who owns the site, and what happens when we stop working together?

You do. Nothing stays with us as leverage, and you don't need to worry that switching providers means building everything from scratch. Below we break it down, because in practice a site is several separate accounts and resources.

The accounts your site runs on

Every one of them is yours: the domain, hosting on Cloudflare, email, Resend (the service your contact form uses to send you messages), your Google accounts such as Search Console or your Business Profile, and — if you have a package with the panel — the Sanity project, the system the content panel runs on. We set them up in your name, or you set them up yourself following our guide, so they're yours from day one, not ours. We get access to them only to configure and publish the site. You pay for any paid services directly to the providers, and the invoices come from them.

Email

If you have email on your own domain, the account with the email provider is yours as well, and you pay for it yourself. Once we've handed over the login details, we don't keep the passwords to your mailboxes — more in Email on your own domain.

The site's code

The site's code is kept in a repository on GitHub — think of it as the archive holding your site's building plans — and that repository belongs to you as well. Formally, under the contract, we grant you a perpetual licence to the site's code, so you can keep using it after our cooperation ends. If you'd like the details of that clause, get in touch.

Content and photos

The text and photos belong to you. If your package includes the content panel, they're stored in a separate Sanity project set up just for your site — you don't share it with our other clients, and only the people you invite, and we, can see it.

When you end the ongoing-care subscription

Ongoing care is an optional subscription, so you can cancel it. The site then keeps working exactly as before. The only thing that changes is how changes get made: if you have the panel, you keep editing content there, and anything else you can order from us one job at a time (see What's included in ongoing support, and what's billed separately).

When you want to move to another provider

Then you take everything with you: the domain, hosting, email, the other accounts, the content and the code repository. Because the accounts are yours, you can take away our access at any time and give it to someone new, the way you change the locks when a tenant moves out. Let us know you're ending the cooperation, and we'll agree on how to hand over anything else you still need.
